Dirty Grout Helps Dirty Your Food

Posted by Bryon Zipkin on February 26th, 2009

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’m the average Joe type, working for 8 hours a day for six (maybe seven) days in a week. While growing up, my dream was to be a chef, but somewhere down the line, I decided it wasn’t practical and went into a different career instead. Now I’m a desk jock and I’m finding it a bit boring and repetitive. Fortunately, my girlfriend has a knack for bringing excitement into my life.

Many have decided to cut back on spending with the advent of our country’s recession, and I’m no different. My busy lifestyle used to take me to restaurants for almost every meal, but as of late I find myself going back to my roots. Packing my own food and cooking my own dinner seem a lot more practical these days.

Unfortunately, I am very skeptical about my apartment’s kitchen counter. I’ve never used it before, but in the same light, I think the people who previously lived here used it a lot, and the grout in between the tiles in particular is extremely dirty. I’m pretty certain I would get sick if I decide to prepare food there.

Determined to cook my own dinners, I decided to roll-up my sleeves and get to work cleaning the counters. And the rest of the house, too, while I’m at it, so I can invite my girlfriend over. Unfortunately, a few minutes of scrubbing made me realize just how hard it is to clean grout. I did some light reading and found out it was made of porous cement. Being so, it had absorbed all the food particles that it made contact with. Maybe for years. So all the grime have seeped in thoroughly.

I would want the kitchen counter to be sparkling white again, if I had the time to spend working on it. Unfortunately, as I’ve said, I work six days in a week, and generally take Sundays off as a day of rest and relaxation. I did the next best thing: I went online and surfed around for anyone in the area who could come in and take care of it for me.

Fun Paint Ideas For a Boys Room

Posted by Debra That Painter Lady Conrad on February 19th, 2009

Most children like their bedroom to reflect their own personality and interests. With a bit of imagination and a few pots of paint a plain boy’s room can be turned into a place of their very own. By all means surprise him - but it won’t harm to get some ideas and feedback from the intended resident.

Themed Boys’ Rooms

Paint can recreate whole environments, from outer space to underwater and there’s bound to be a way to adapt a room to suit your son’s interests. Many boys will be thrilled with a bedroom that recreates cowboy country, outdoor activities, sporting themes or cars - but you may want to beware of excess gender-stereotyping. Identify some key motifs or visual effects that can be replicated in paint. You could go for themed and coordinated accents rather than recreating a total fantasy world.

Expressing a room theme using paint can involve little more than choosing a suitable color scheme (perhaps a sports team’s colors) and recreating motifs associated with the theme. At the other end of the spectrum is the creation of a full-on illusion. If your son is adamant he wants to live in a tree house, you can use paint on all four walls plus ceiling to create that fantasy, using accessories to provide the finishing touches. With faux brickwork (easy with stencils) you can fake a room in a castle or, with trompe l’oeil portholes, the appearance of a ship’s cabin.

Paint techniques offer countless imaginative solutions for transforming rooms. Instead of posters of sporting heroes, think laterally. For a young diver, a trompe l’oeil window providing a vista of the ocean depths is more exciting than posters of exotic underwater life. Faux paint techniques can be used to give the appearance of age or bring the feel of the outdoors indoors, depending on your theme.

Your child may outgrow his current passion or lose interest with changing trends, so factor this in when deciding how extensive your makeover will be.

Color Schemes and Paints

Themed rooms often invite particular color schemes and treatments. If you’re not going for a theme, consider a color scheme that doesn’t show the dirt that many small boys seem to attract. Washable, scuff-resistant paints are recommended for active boy’s rooms.

Novelty Paints

Special purpose paints can add humor and fun to a boy’s room. A young astronomer might appreciate the constellations in luminous paint on the ceiling, for example. Chalkboard paint is a great idea for childrens rooms and serves a practical purpose. It only comes in black and green though you can make your own in other colors. Painted on walls or doors, chalkboard paint allows kids to draw on the walls without doing permanent damage! Magnetic paint is another fun invention that will allow a boy to pin up his favorite pics using magnets.

Bathroom Remodeling Software can Help your Remodeling Project

Posted by Chet Lystrom on February 13th, 2009

Your computer can help you with almost anything these days. While it can’t do the physical labor for you, it can help you plan things out before you start. In remodeling your bathroom, you can use the computer to help you plan the finances (usually with a Quicken-type program already included in the start-up package), find a contractor (through internet ads), and plan exactly what your remodeled bathroom will look like with bathroom remodeling software.

Software Facts

Bathroom remodeling software is usually combined with an overall house-remodeling program. That way this program can be used over and over for other house-hold renovation projects. You can even regift the software.

Most software is not cheap, although you can often find it on sale. In any event, the average price for a good bathroom remodeling software program is in the range of $100. Don’t download any files offered you on a peer-to-peer network or from a friend’s pirated software. You want to make sure your program has the most recent security features and doesn’t come spring-loaded with insidious spyware. It’s safest (and most economical) to just buy the software.

Programs like SmartDraw, offer free trial versions of their bathroom remodeling software. This is a very simple way of decided which program works best for your and with your computer. Not only do bathroom remodeling programs help you with the designs, but they help you schedule the work and keep track of a remodeling project budget.

Say you’ve decided that, as part of your renovation, you would like a new floor for your bathroom. You’ve decided that ceramic tile would be ideal, and wonder how much to budget for that part of the project. Perhaps there are a variety of flooring options for the same price.

So many questions needing so many answers. Bathroom remodeling software can help you figure all this out, including estimated costs for the various options available to work with.

Although each software program has differences, most will also have an address book feature where you can put all the contact numbers of all potential contractors or lenders, if you are considering taking out a loan to cover this remodeling project. Using this type of software isn’t a sign of unprofessionalism, quite the contrary, since most professional contractors use software of some sort to help them plan their projects.

Defining a Budget for your Bathroom Renovation Project

Posted by Chet Lystrom on February 6th, 2009

You cannot complete a bathroom renovation project without first determining your budget. You are the only one who can determine how much money you can afford to spend on the remodeling project and will need to research to determine how much work can be done for the available cash.

Your time should also be considered and if you will lose more money from taking time off work to contract the job on your own than it would cost to pay a contractor, you may as well pay them to take on some of the headaches.

Remember to include the cost of any permits, subcontractors and inspectors that you’ll need to start and complete your bathroom renovation project. Some states require certain permits and inspections for certain renovation work, like plumbing and electricals.

For you own safety it is a good plan and may even be required for plumbing work beyond the fixtures. If you don’t have the expertise or knowledge to, say, cut and lay tiles you may want to hire out that task to a professional to ensure a quality finished product.

What Can You Do Yourself?

There are some areas of your bathroom renovation project that you can do without having to hire a contractor. While it is a necessary part of the job, removing debris and cleaning up at the end of every day is something most homeowner can do. Work with the contractor of the bathroom renovation project and determine if it is worth your time to go home every night and clean up someone else’s mess.

Another aspect a homeowner can do his or herself is the installation of new light fixtures. The installation is usually pretty basic, but should rewiring be necessary at an point, a professional electrician may need to be brought in. A reliable contractor should be able to advise you on what you can and cannot legally do on your own and if you have the expertise can save some money on the cost of the bathroom renovation.

Typically, homeowners will hand over the entire project to a contractor and their only responsibility is to sign the checks to pay for the job. However, tracking progress and dealing straight with the bathroom renovation contractor can help ensure the job is done on time and within budget.

Fix XBOX Errors Once and For All

Posted by Roy Gumble on February 3rd, 2009

Would you like to know how to fix XBOX errors? Has your console stopped working properly? This is one of the most common situations we get asked about at our blog so today I am going to show you what causes XBOX error and what can be done to fix it once and for all.

XBOX Error is caused primarily because a malfunctioning cooling system. Your consoles cooling system is composed of vents, fans and heat sinks that work together to keep the system cool. When they stop working the internal components of your console start to heat up and can lead to permanent damage.

Gamers have a few that they can use to fix XBOX errors without having to spend a penny.

Dust ? you may simply need to blow into the vents of your console where dust has accumulated.

Improper circulation ? gamers will often store their XBOX’s in a location where air does not circulate properly. You may just need to take your XBOX off its shelf and take it into the open where it can “breath”.

You may have heard about a do it yourself fix called “the towel fix” this involves wrapping your XBOX in a towel and turning it on and off several times. This may sounds ridiculous and it is. In fact, you might end up doing more harm than good if you try something like this.

If neither of the first two techniques are successful you can always return your console back to Microsoft where they will fix XBOX errors. The drawbacks is that you will be required to pay a $140 repair bill if your 90 warrantee has expired and in addition to having to cover the shipping and handling charges you will lose access to your system for 6-8 weeks.

These days most XBOX fanatics can’t wait 6-8 weeks so they are taking matters into their own hands to fix XBOX errors. They are purchasing XBOX repair guides online that come with step by step instructional videos that show you how to fix any type of XBOX errors. These guides only cost about $25 and come with a 100% money back guarantee. Best of all they promise results in as little as 30 minutes.

Kitchen Floor Installation Tips

Posted by Alix Montoya on February 1st, 2009

A good new flooring is what an old kitchen like yours needs. There are hundreds of choices available today and all you have to do is take your pick. It’s a great project to do and if you think that your new floor isn’t doing it for you, you can have it changed back. That’s what’s great about kitchen floor installations.

Usually, if you have already decided to replace your old floor, the new floor can be installed directly over the old one, if the old floor is still in an okay condition. Although this is a cheap option, your kitchen floor would appear higher than other floors adjacent to it. If that’s the case, you can just go with removing the old floor altogether.

Vinyl is a great choice for kitchens and you can save a lot if you buy it in sheets. Use adhesives recommended by the manufacturer. Try to lay down the sheets first by using cardboard or paper templates first. Plan it all out before you start sticking the sheets on the floor. It will help you estimate on the actual installation.

Polished concrete is also a popular choice for kitchens. It’s easy to install and it’s cheap to keep. It looks impressive too. It’s more durable than marble and less expensive than stone floors. And it comes in many different colors just by adding a few pigments to the cement mixture.

Whatever you choose for your kitchen floor, make sure that you get the overall idea first. Planning is a very important step when you’re thinking of home improvement projects. Take your time and everything will soon look great.

Installing Ceramic Tile in Bathroom DIY Way

Posted by Anthony Galz on January 30th, 2009

Installing ceramic tile in bathroom floors and customizing your own dream bath is easy. All it takes is a little patience, dedication, some dash of enthusiasm and you can make that tiled bathroom floor of your dreams come true! You’ll find that installing ceramic tile in bathroom is easy to accomplish simply by following these tile installation instructions.

The foremost important thing is to be certain that you have the proper tools. A tape measure, some chalk and string, a tile cutter, and a pair of tile nippers, tile spacers, a notched trowel and a rubber grout float are what you will need for installing ceramic tile in bathroom floor.

Laying Out Walls - The first step is to lay out your walls. Start by finding the center of your wall. Draw vertical and horizontal lines and mark the intersecting lines. These will be your reference lines for your tiling work.

When installing your ceramic bathroom floor tiles, make sure that your walls are clean of dust and debris. Don’t forget to repair the cracks and fill in the gaps and holes in the floor. Get strong tile thinset mortar or tile adhesive for installing ceramic tile in bathroom floors — the type that prevents moisture intrusion when it dries. You can choose from a wide selection of tiling mortars and tile adhesives.

Always start at the reference point you just laid out. Do regular checks when you’re installing ceramic tile in bathroom so you can make sure that all your tiles have bonded properly and consistently. Place your tile over it and press the tile down firmly in place. Give it a slow, twisting motion till the ceramic tile is firmly in place. Duplicate this procedure with the rest of your ceramic tiles. To get a consistent tiling, place tile spacers on all the spaces between your ceramic bathroom tiles.

Drying - After installing your ceramic tiles, leave them to dry overnight. Once they’ve dried, you can start laying in your grout. There are two main kinds of grout for installing ceramic tile in bathroom: Sanded or unsanded grout. For tile spaces that are more than an eighth of an inch wide you can use sanded grout.

Grout - For smaller tile spaces, use unsanded grout. Try to angle your rubber grout float and press firmly down when installing ceramic tile in bathroom. Check for pockets of air and dab these spaces with more grout. Let the grout set for a bit and wipe off any excess grout with a damp sponge. Rinse your sponge regularly so you can get a cleaner and better finish. Then, wipe your new ceramic bathroom tile floor dry with some clean rags. Leave your tiles overnight to let it dry out completely.

It’s that easy. Installing ceramic tile in bathroom DIY-style can be easy and can give you a lot of satisfaction. Follow these instructions and you won’t go wrong. So, try installing your ceramic bathroom tile floors now!

Basic Methods of Concrete Polishing

Posted by Mikkan Drane on January 23rd, 2009

Polished concrete is a generic term in floor styling that easily gives you pictures of a variety of decorative shiny concrete flooring possibilities. Instead of laying over the concrete slab another coating of some sort, say vinyl, tiles, or carpet, concrete polishing allows you to leave the concrete exposed as the final floor finish as itself. And that does not mean you will have that gray colored finish, nothing like that. In fact, you will have something that is so much more.

There are three methods to use on concrete polishing: honing, burnishing, or trowelling. Depending on the design and pattern that you want for your floor, these three options will give you the sought of style that you always wanted. This offered concrete polishing option carries qualities like being energy efficient, dust free and requires low maintenance.

A steel trowelled finish is a concrete polishing process that can be achieved by hand or with a power trowelling machine. Whichever you will use depends mostly on the area to be processed. Trowelling marks are one of the downsides on this option however, if advised, can be fixed and or avoided. It gives off the typical natural grey concrete look, but can be upgraded to a lighter color by incorporating an amount of off white cement.

Burnishing is done right after the steel trowelling process, if you are desiring a more elegant, smoother and shinier flooring. This procedure actually started out with alternative burnishing materials like floor waxes, resin based and liquid polishes coatings. The effects resulting from the burnishing process improves the quality and appearance after the trowel method.

The honing process, which is the third method in the concrete polishing list, is the toughest or better yet, the one with the most required depth in the process. Through honing, one is required to grind the concrete surface with abrasives. Besides the smooth surface that it produces, aggravates should start to appear at some point adding up to the end aesthetic result.

By using your creativity, and knowing how to mix up all these processes along with the right tools, and the right materials, you will surely get a concrete polished floor that is classy and elegant in the end. Add in the right color combination, the pattern and style and you are definitely in for the best polished concrete floor to brag about.
